The Lagos State medical doctor, Idara Bassey, who was previously declared wanted in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman during a buttock enlargement (BBL) surgery in Lekki Phase 1, has been taken into police custody.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed on Tuesday that Bassey was being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti.

Bassey had gone into hiding after a patient, Abiola, tragically died during a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic on August 26, 2024. The procedure, known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to enhance their size and shape.

GWG.ng recalls that the police had previously arrested the nurse who administered the injection that led to Abiola’s death, while Bassey, the clinic owner, was listed as a suspect due to her disappearance after the incident.

Abiola had left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, and asked her driver to take her to the clinic for the buttock enlargement procedure. Unfortunately, after the nurse gave the injection, reportedly under Bassey’s instructions, Abiola lost consciousness and began struggling to breathe. The driver reported this incident to the police.

When asked on Tuesday about the progress of the investigation, Hundeyin confirmed that Dr. Bassey is now in police custody at SCID. When pressed about whether Bassey will face charges, Hundeyin stated that further details will be available only after the investigation is complete.
