Nigerians Turn to Walking, Horse Riding, and Biking As Vehicles Disappear (Photos)
Amid the surge in fuel prices, many residents and civil servants in Borno State have shifted away from using vehicles, opting instead for walking, horse riding, bicycles, and tricycles as alternative modes of transportation.
A tour of Maiduguri, the state capital, on Thursday morning revealed fewer cars on the road and an increase in pedestrians, horse riders, and cyclists navigating major streets. The price hike has caused widespread adjustments, as residents grapple with the rising cost of transportation.
Tricycle operators now cite the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s (NNPC) recent fuel price increase as the reason for higher fares.
GWG.ng reports that the price of fuel was increased to N855 and above per litre earlier this week, with NNPC stations across the country reflecting different prices depending on location. The steep increase has left many Nigerians struggling to adjust, as the cost of mobility continues to rise.
