Shafi’u Umar, who is 37 years old and was formerly the Special Assistant to the immediate past governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Tambuwal is to spend some days in jail while a court ponders his application for bail over information allegedly sent out to smear the incumbent governor.

A Chief Magistrate Court in Sokoto has ordered the detention of Shafi’u Umar in a correctional facility.

Umar is accused of spreading false information about Governor Ahmad Aliyu and his wife on social media.

Shafi’u Umar, who is 37 years old and was formerly the Special Assistant to the previous Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, now faces charges of spreading harmful falsehoods and defamatory statements.

The case was first brought before the court on August 26, when Police Prosecutor Inspector Abdurahman Mansur informed the court that Umar’s actions were in violation of the penal code.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the alleged offense took place on July 18.

The prosecution claimed that Umar shared a video showing the governor’s wife, Hajia Fatima Aliyu, “spraying money during her birthday celebration despite the economic challenges affecting the people.” Umar was also accused of circulating a document that falsely claimed Governor Aliyu had failed his Senior Secondary School Examination, received an F9 grade, and could not speak English.

Umar pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer, Mr. Al’Mustafa Abubakar, made an oral request for bail, but the prosecution opposed it, leading the magistrate to delay her decision on the matter.

Abubakar also requested that the court delay the case for a full hearing, arguing that the prosecution was stalling under the guise of an ongoing investigation that should have been completed.

Chief Magistrate Fati Hassan noted that the only document before her was the First Information Report (FIR). She explained that due to the seriousness of the allegations, the defense must submit a formal written application for bail.

The judge set the next hearing for September 18 and ordered that Umar be held in a correctional facility until then.
