Dangerous Criminals Escape As Flood Sweeps Nigeria Prison Facility

A yet-to-be-determined number of inmates possibly including insurgents were able to escape from a local prison in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding that submerged the facility.

According to reports, the rising floodwaters in Maiduguri caused significant damage to the prison, breaching security barriers and weakening the structure, allowing the inmates to escape. Many of the fugitives are considered highly dangerous, with some potentially armed, posing an increased risk to public safety in a region already grappling with insurgency.

Authorities have initiated a manhunt, deploying additional resources to track down and recapture the escaped inmates, while security has been heightened in surrounding areas to mitigate the growing threat.

Meanwhile, the news of the escape by inmates from the Maiduguri prison came as the Forestry and Wild Life in Borno Ministry of Environment said a herd of elephants that allegedly strayed from the neighbouring Cameroon has invaded and destroyed some community farmlands in the state.

A Director in the ministry, Mr Ayuba Peter, confirmed the ugly incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Monday.

Peter said the incident had become perennial in the last five years in the area.

“We have been having reports of elephants destroying farmlands in Gamboru/Ngala and Kala-Balge Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the past five years.

“They use to come from a forest reserve in the neighbouring Cameroon Republic at this time and roam around, causing serious destruction to farmlands until flood water recedes around December,” Peter said.

He further said that the menace had been reported to the Federal Government through the National Park for urgent intervention.
