ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University chapter, has declared an indefinite strike, citing unresolved issues with the university administration.

The strike, which takes immediate effect, was announced after a congress meeting held on Wednesday, making it the first internal ASUU strike in the 21-year history of the Gombe State University.

In a statement, the ASUU Chairman of Gombe State University emphasized the necessity of the action, stating, “The strike is unavoidable due to the university’s persistent failure to address our long-standing demands.”

This decision is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university, with the union expressing its frustration over the lack of progress in resolving key issues affecting the welfare of its members.

As the strike commences, all academic operations at Gombe State University will be suspended indefinitely until the university management meets the demands of the local chapter of ASUU.

Meanwhile, besides the news of the ASUU strike in the Gombe State University, it has emerged that the Gombe State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has launched a project aimed at tackling foundational literacy challenge and poor numeracy skills in primary schools.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the initiative is in response to alarming findings from a recent Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS).

The survey revealed that only 25 per cent of Nigerian children, particularly in the North, in primary grades four, five, and six, can read a basic text or solve simple arithmetic, particularly in the North.

Speaking on Tuesday at the stakeholders’ engagement on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), organised by the partners, Dr Aishatu Maigari, Commissioner of Education, decried the grim reality which indicates that one in every three children, are out of school.
