Edo: Obaseki Warns Of Police, APC Collusion

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed concern over what he described as collusion between the police and the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to target and intimidate members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He claims that the police are working with the opposition to arrest PDP members in the state.

As the governorship election in Edo approaches, the political climate has become increasingly tense. With less than two weeks to go, parties are reportedly exploring all possible strategies to secure a win in the election. The pressure has intensified, and both parties are eager to gain any advantage that could guarantee victory.

Governor Obaseki took to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday night to raise the alarm about the alleged harassment. He accused the police of working against his party members, calling attention to the situation amidst continued reports of violence in the state leading up to the election.

“It is unbecoming of officers of the Nigeria Police Force to connive with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to illegally arrest and detain members of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and to stir up crisis in Edo State in the lead-up to the guber poll,” he wrote.

“I have it on good authority that the plan is to arrest as many PDP stalwarts as possible. This is a very dangerous trend and poses a real threat to our democracy.

“A situation where the sitting local government chairman of Esan West is arrested and whisked away to Abuja, undermining my authority as the Chief Security Officer of the State is totally unacceptable.

“I strongly appeal to the supporters of the PDP to remain calm and peaceful. The Inspector General of Police is expected in the state tomorrow, and I will make my feelings known to him. It is in no one’s interest, especially the Police, to undermine our democracy,” he warned.
