Traffic in Benin City, especially around Mission Road and New Benin Market, came to a standstill on Tuesday as the Labour Party (LP), led by Peter Obi and its governorship candidate Olumide Akpata, intensified their campaign efforts for the upcoming September 21 election.

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, visited important places like Oba Market drawing admiration from supporters. Supporters started arriving at the party’s state secretariat on Sakponba Road as early as 9 AM, even though it was raining. Many came to show their support for Obi, who is still seen by some as the rightful winner of the February 2 presidential election.

This campaign event was a crucial final push before the deadline for campaign activities, which is September 19, just days before the election.

At Oba Market, Obi addressed the crowd, saying, “You know things have become very bad under this government. There is no light, no water, no security, no fuel. Everything in this country is scattered. What we want in Nigeria is change. We want to put food on our table, we want the government to tell us what they are using the money from fuel subsidies for, and we want a better Edo. On the 21st, you know what you will do. Ensure you vote for Mama, papa, pikin so that we can start to repair Nigeria from Edo State. We need to change the people who say they are bringing change. You must vote for Olumide Akpata, who is your guy.”

Olumide Akpata, the LP’s gubernatorial candidate, also spoke, stating, “This is the time for the election. Our father is here. We need to show that we have a father in Peter Obi. He asked me if you people will vote, and I said we are among the best voters in this country. I am your guy, and Edo will be okay. On the 21st of September, we will remove those in government who have misused our resources.”
