Alimikhena to APC

Former Senator Francis Alimikhena, a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) just a week before the Edo governorship election.

His defection introduced a new twist to the political scene. Alimikhena was welcomed into the APC at a grand rally held at the UNIBEN sports complex in Benin.

His party switch surprised many, causing widespread reactions and raising concerns about its implications for the PDP in Edo State.

Top political leaders, including Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and other APC governors, were present at the event to welcome him.

Senator Alimikhena had played a significant role in the PDP, especially during the 2023 general election, known for his leadership and dedication. His departure is considered a major loss for the PDP, potentially affecting the party’s strength and morale.

Born on September 20, 1947, Alimikhena served as Senator for Edo North from 2015 to 2023. He was first elected in 2015 and reelected in 2019.

During his Senate tenure, he was vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and also contributed to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review.
