United 2-0 Southampton

Manchester United returned to Premier League action with a solid 2-0 victory against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.

After suffering a 3-0 loss to Liverpool before the international break, Erik ten Hag’s team needed a strong performance to bounce back, and they delivered, thanks to goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Marcus Rashford.

Southampton dominated the first 30 minutes, with United struggling to control the game. However, a crucial turning point came when goalkeeper Andre Onana saved a penalty from Southampton’s Archer in the 31st minute. The save energized United, and they quickly responded with De Ligt’s header from a well-worked corner in the 35th minute, putting them 1-0 up.

Just five minutes later, Rashford doubled United’s lead with a curling shot into the bottom corner, following a smart build-up. From that point, the momentum shifted entirely, with United looking more confident and controlling the rest of the match.

In the second half, despite some knocks to Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui, United continued to dominate. Southampton made a quadruple substitution to regain control but struggled to create any meaningful chances.

Ten Hag made several changes late in the game, bringing on Harry Maguire, Manuel Ugarte, and Alejandro Garnacho. While United couldn’t add to their tally, they saw the game out comfortably, maintaining their lead and securing the much-needed three points.

This victory eases some of the pressure on Ten Hag and his team, who had faced criticism for their slow start to the season.
