Traders and Butchers Stranded As Man Wins Land Case Where Market Was Built

Numerous traders and butchers at the newly constructed Wazobia (Wazo) market in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have been left stranded after being locked out of their shops.

This development follows the execution of a court order from an Oyo State High Court in favor of J.A. Ladeji and Sons (Nig). Ltd., who claimed ownership of the land where the market in Ogbomoso is situated.

The judgment, delivered on August 26, 2024, by Justice K.B. Olawoyin, ruled that the plaintiff, J.A. Ladeji and Sons, was the rightful owner of the 1.875-hectare land. The land had previously been allocated to butchers by the Oyo State government through the Ogbomoso North Local Government earlier this year. However, the court determined that the state government had no right to allocate the land, as it was legally owned by the plaintiff.

In the ruling, Justice Olawoyin stated, “The Claimant has satisfied the requirements of Order 63 of the Rules of this Court, 2022, and is entitled to summary judgment for possession of the land in dispute. Accordingly, the Claimant’s claim succeeds, and I hereby grant an order for the Claimant to take possession of the parcel of land along Ilorin Road, Ogbomoso, which covers an area of approximately 1.875 hectares.”

Following the court order, the judgment enforcement unit, along with security operatives, arrived at the market on Friday to take possession of the property. Notices reading “possession taken by High Court” were posted at strategic points around the market, making it clear that the court had seized control of the area.

As of Saturday, traders and butchers were still unable to access their shops, with many expressing frustration over the sudden enforcement. The eviction has disrupted business operations, and traders are struggling to find alternative solutions as they await further developments.
