PDP Crisis Continues As Former National Secretary Is Suspended

The Tsauri ‘A’ Ward Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the suspension of Senator Umar Tsauri, the party’s former National Secretary, over alleged anti-party activities and misconduct.

In a letter signed by Ward Chairman Alhaji Danjume Abubakar, the committee revealed that the decision was reached at a meeting on September 14, 2024. The suspension will remain in place while a disciplinary committee investigates the allegations.

Senator Tsauri is accused of making unguarded statements against the national leadership of the PDP, engaging in actions that could tarnish the party’s image, and maintaining associations deemed harmful to the party’s interests. Citing Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, the committee explained that ward executives have the authority to discipline members found guilty of misconduct.

“We must work together to build a strong and united party capable of winning elections and serving the interest of our people,” the committee urged PDP members in a statement, emphasizing the need for unity and loyalty.

Alhaji Lawal Audi-Yar’adua, the spokesperson for the PDP in Katsina State, confirmed receipt of the suspension notice from Tsauri’s ward and assured that a committee has been established to investigate the allegations. He affirmed that the party would strictly follow constitutional provisions in addressing the matter, regardless of the member’s status.

Reacting to the suspension, Senator Tsauri questioned its legality, arguing that neither the ward nor the state chapter of the party has the constitutional authority to suspend a former National Secretary without following due process. Tsauri also noted that he had not received any formal notification of his suspension and only learned about it through social media.

“The party has its rules and regulations, and before any action is taken against a member, certain processes have to be followed,” he said, signaling his intention to contest the decision.
