Why Many Artistes Struggle Financially – DJ Neptune

Popular Nigerian DJ, DJ Neptune has shared his thoughts on why some artistes face financial difficulties, especially when they fail to plan for the future during their peak years in the music industry.

During an appearance on the Zero Conditions Podcast, Neptune emphasized the importance of financial management and cautioned against careless spending. He pointed out, “Artistes feel fame is forever; that’s why some of them, while they are at their peak, don’t save up their money, they don’t invest.”

Neptune recounted a conversation in which someone mentioned how certain artists use their advance payments to buy luxury items like expensive cars. He criticized this mindset, remarking, “Is that not your future you’re driving?” He saw this as a wake-up call for many artists who don’t think long-term.

Having worked with top artists, Neptune reflected on the fleeting nature of fame and warned that without proper financial decisions, many artists might struggle once their popularity wanes.

He also encouraged his fellow artists to make wise investments while they are still at the top of their game. “That’s why I tell some of my colleagues, while you are on top, invest your money. If it’s properties you want to do, just have a side income,” he suggested.

Neptune further noted that only a small number of artistes manage to sustain their careers for more than a decade. He stressed that artists need to adapt and evolve or risk losing their way. “It is only a few of us that have the grace to be in the game for more than five, ten years. You are appealing to a certain age group, and if you don’t know how to tone down and switch, you might have missed your way,” he concluded, urging artists to plan for their future.
