Lagos Parents Protest 200% Hike In College Boarding Fee

A surge of frustration has spread through Ikorodu, Lagos State, as parents of students at Oriwu Model College voiced their discontent over the abrupt and significant rise in boarding fees.

The state government had raised the fees of Oriwu Model College from N35,000 to N100,000, a move that has sparked outrage due to the ongoing economic difficulties in Nigeria.

The protest took place at the school gate, with parents calling for an immediate reversal of the fee hike. Mr. Kazeem Oladuni, Chairman of the Parents Forum Association (PFA) at Oriwu Model College, expressed the collective frustration of the parents. “Our children were supposed to resume on September 9, but we received a memo that one week had been added, which expired today, September 15,” he explained.

“To our surprise, another memo came out on September 13, indicating that the boarding fees had been increased from N35,000 to N100,000,” Oladuni added. He also explained the parents’ position: “We had a meeting with the Lagos State Coordinator of the PFA and agreed that the fees are outrageous, especially given the current economic hardships in the country.”

The parents are now urging the state Ministry of Education to revert to the old fees, so their children can resume school without further delays.
