Nigerians Question Dangote As They Wake Up To New Petrol Price Hike
Nigerians have taken to social media to express their frustration and disappointment following the sudden overnight increase in petrol price by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) following the first delivery of the product from Dangote Refinery.
GWG.ng reports that the petrol price hike came just hours after the NNPC lifted its first batch of petrol from the Dangote Refinery, pushing the pump price to a staggering N950 per litre.
The timing of the announcement, made around 1:30 AM on Monday, has fueled suspicion among many citizens, with several accusing the NNPC of making strategic midnight updates to avoid immediate public backlash.
One concerned netizen lamented, “1:30 AM Monday morning releasing updates, by daybreak fuel will be higher when Nigerians wake up.”
The conversation quickly turned to the perceived lack of benefit from the Dangote Refinery, with users expressing disappointment over the high price, despite the petrol being refined locally. “They know exactly what they are doing. So what exactly is the benefit of having this refinery? I thought the price should be lower since it’s refined here, with no cost of transporting it abroad? Omo, the refinery is as good as not having it since the price is still up. Government of propaganda,” another user vented.
Others pointed out the economic strain the price increase puts on average Nigerians, particularly as the Federal Government has yet to implement a new minimum wage for workers. “The Federal Government is yet to start paying the new minimum wage to its workers hmmm,” one user wrote, highlighting the disconnect between rising costs and stagnant wages.
“Those prices are still astronomically high. How much is the minimum wage in Nigeria?” another questioned, emphasizing the growing economic disparity.
Critics also noted the similarity in the NNPC’s timing to the late-night announcement of the 2023 general election results, with one person sarcastically remarking, “Why do you guys have to wait till the middle of the night before you paste your pump price? This is the same logic that was used when the 2023 election results were announced.”
As the new petrol price continues to crystallise, reactions show increasing frustration among Nigerians, many of whom feel the promises of economic relief from the Dangote Refinery have not materialized. The conversation continues to evolve, with citizens calling for more transparency and accountability from the government and the NNPC.
