NNPC Lied On Us – Dangote Refinery Debunks N898 Petrol Price

The Dangote Refinery has refuted reports that it sold petrol to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) at the price of N898 per litre, describing the claims as “misleading and mischievous.”

In a statement released on Sunday, Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote Company, debunked the allegations, which had gained traction following a statement attributed to NNPC spokesperson Olufemi Soneye that it obtained the petrol from the refinery at a price of N898.

“Our attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to NNPCL spokesperson, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, that we sell our PMS at N898 per litre to the NNPCL. This statement is both misleading and mischievous,” Chiejina said in the release.

The refinery urged Nigerians to disregard the claims, noting that the official pricing structure will be announced by a Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, which was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The committee’s work will commence on October 1, 2024.

Chiejina also clarified that the refinery is currently selling its products to the NNPCL in U.S. dollars, due to the dollar-based procurement of crude. He emphasized that this arrangement has allowed the NNPCL to achieve significant savings compared to its import costs.

He added, “This milestone, achieved on September 15, 2024, is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s long-standing energy insufficiency and insecurity. We urge Nigerians to wait for the formal announcement on pricing, and we are confident that our efforts will ensure the availability of petrol across the country, even in remote areas.”

The statement concluded by assuring Nigerians that Dangote Refinery remains committed to ending the endemic fuel scarcity and providing high-quality petroleum products nationwide.

This follows an earlier claim by NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye, who stated, “We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today. The claim that we purchased it at N760 per liter is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was N898 per liter.”

With the controversy unfolding, the public now awaits the formal price structure announcement set for October 1, 2024, which is expected to provide clarity on petrol price from Dangote Refinery and other local refineries.
