Wike, Fubara And The Violence That Marred IYC Elections (Video)

Controversial former Nigerian militant leader, Asari Dokubo, is at the center of a violent altercation that erupted during the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) elections, reportedly held on Saturday at Abuloma Community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a disturbing video circulating online, Asari was seen giving “fortification water” to his men ahead of the elections, which later devolved into chaos, leading to bloodshed.

The election reportedly became a proxy battleground between two key figures—Asari Dokubo, who is allegedly aligned with former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike, and Ateke Tom, believed to be supporting Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara. Tensions reached a boiling point as both “godfathers” sought to secure victory for their preferred candidates, leading to an inevitable clash.

Sources say Asari Dokubo’s men, numbering 500 and dressed in white, stormed the community on the day of the election. Their goal was clear: they demanded that Ateke Tom’s candidate, backed by Fubara, step down immediately. When the candidate refused, the situation escalated. Asari’s men reportedly retreated to their buses, returning heavily armed with machine guns, cutlasses, axes, and accompanied by four traditional “juju” men.

Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of terror as the group began indiscriminately shooting at male residents, sparing no one in their path. The violence resulted in widespread panic, with security officers abandoning their posts, leaving the community vulnerable to the attack. Residents reported hearing gunfire for hours, and sources indicated that several innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire, with stray bullets hitting community members who were simply going about their daily lives.

Although initial reports suggest that 6-7 people lost their lives, many believe the actual death toll could have been higher, especially given the number of community members and Asari’s own men reportedly killed during the rampage.

This violent outburst was not entirely unexpected, as Asari Dokubo had previously warned in a Facebook live session that such actions would occur if his demands were not met during the election. His threats have now materialized into deadly violence, leaving the Abuloma community devastated.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police has since ordered a full investigation into the incident, with a directive to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice. However, the community is now pointing fingers squarely at Asari Dokubo, blaming him for orchestrating the mayhem and plunging their once peaceful environment into chaos.

As the investigation unfolds, the people of Rivers State—and indeed the entire nation—are waiting to see whether justice will be served or if this deadly clash will become yet another chapter in Nigeria’s turbulent political landscape.
