Edo: Ighodalo Sets Conditions For Signing Peace Agreement
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Edo State governorship election on September 21, Asue Ighodalo, has said that his party will sign the peace accord with other political parties only if certain conditions are met by the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force.
Ighodalo made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He expressed concern that some PDP members had been arrested and detained without being taken to court.
He explained that his party was ready to sign the peace accord, which other political parties had already signed, once their detained supporters were released.
“We had several conditions, most of which have now been met with one left. Many of our guys have been held unjustly,” Ighodalo stated.
He continued, “We think if you hold guys, you charge them or let them go on bail. So, either they charge all our guys or let them go on bail. Once that is achieved, we will sign the peace accord.”
Ighodalo also mentioned that the reason the PDP initially refused to sign the peace agreement was due to an unfair playing field. However, he acknowledged that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had assured them of neutrality in the election process. He emphasized that the PDP promotes non-violence, and this stance will remain unchanged.
Last Thursday, all political parties involved in the Edo election signed the peace accord, but the PDP did not participate, which raised concerns. Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who leads the Peace Committee, had earlier mentioned that Governor Obaseki, a PDP chieftain, declined to sign the agreement due to allegations against the police.
Additionally, the PDP Chairman in Edo State, Tony Aziegbemi, walked out of the peace pact venue in protest during the event on Thursday.
