Hungry Nigerians Tear Remi Tinubu’s Unity Fabric To Pieces

The First Lady of Nigeria, Remi Tinubu, recently unveiled the #OneNigeriaUnityFabric, a project designed to symbolize national unity.

The initiative, which was inspired by her 2023 visit to Zimbabwe, was introduced to the Renewed Hope Initiative as a way to celebrate Nigeria’s diverse culture. According to Tinubu, the fabric, designed by young Nigerian artiste Miss Bamidele Mofiyinfoluwa, will be worn on Independence Day and other national occasions to support local textile industries and create jobs.

However, the launch of the project has sparked significant controversy on social media, as Nigerians criticized the timing of the event given the current economic challenges facing the country. Many expressed frustration, arguing that the celebration of a fabric seemed out of touch with the harsh realities of daily life, including widespread hunger and hardship.

One social media user mocked the initiative, saying, “Naija dey hungry, mommy alagbo dey sell Aso-ebi…. We don enter once chance,” while another accused the First Lady of promoting unity through fabric while fostering “disunity and bigotry for appointments and policies.”

Another user questioned the value of the event, writing, “How much did you charge us for the decoration of this event venue? You will do us a lot of favor by just sitting and watching TV in Aso Rock. All these events do not benefit Nigerians. You’re just using them to st–l public funds.”

Some users also pointed out the disconnect between the message of unity, the fabric symbolizes and the perception of division following the controversial 2023 elections. “Unveiling a #OneNigeriaUnityFabric is not enough. What have you done to unite the people after the divisive electoral process you and your husband oversaw?” one user questioned.

Criticism escalated with more scathing comments aimed at Tinubu, accusing her of being out of touch with the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. “Only an ignorant, arrogant woman will do this in the midst of Nigerian hardship,”

While the First Lady aimed to promote unity and provide economic opportunities with the project, the launch has clearly struck a nerve with a population grappling with rising costs of living, unemployment, and poverty. The initiative’s success may depend on the government’s ability to address these pressing issues and demonstrate real efforts toward national unity beyond symbolic gestures.
