Tinubu Signed Peace Accords – Presidency Counters Bishop Kukah
By Benjamin Abioye
The Presidency has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did sign the Peace Accords in 2023, contrary to some claims pushed through by Bishop Matthew Kukah.
Bayo Onanuga, the Senior Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, stated that the assertion that Tinubu refused to sign the Peace Accord was incorrect.
This statement came after Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Co-Chairman of the National Peace Committee, mentioned during the Edo Election Security Townhall in Benin that political parties and candidates cannot be forced to sign the Peace Accord. He emphasized, “The National Peace Committee’s work is not a legal requirement; it’s more of a moral duty. You can’t compel people to love or be kind to their neighbors.”
Bishop Kukah recalled how, during the 2019 election, the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, did not initially sign the Peace Accord, leading to widespread criticism. However, Atiku eventually signed the next day.
He also pointed out that President Tinubu, when he was a candidate, did not sign at one point, but the opposition failed to capitalize on it. Kukah further noted, “We can’t take anyone to court for not signing the Peace Accord. But it sends a bad message that the opposition can use against you.”
In response, Onanuga explained on Tuesday that President Tinubu did indeed sign both Peace Accords before his election in 2023. He clarified that for the first accord, which was signed on September 29, 2022, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu. The second agreement, which required candidates to accept the outcome of the election, was signed by Tinubu himself on February 23, 2023. Onanuga shared this information on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
HIs statement reads; “Bishop Kukah is not correct; Tinubu signed peace accords in 2023
Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023. The first accord, committing the candidates to a free and credible election in the country, was signed on September 29, 2022. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu.
The second agreement, signed on February 23, 2023, was for the candidates to accept the election outcome.
Tinubu signed.”
