Nigerian University Staff To Commence Indefinite Strike In 3 Weeks If …
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay four months’ worth of withheld salaries.
Failure to comply may result in an indefinite strike, shutting down universities and inter-university centers.
The unions, representing non-academic staff, had previously given the government a 10-day grace period, which expired on July 26, 2024. However, six weeks later, the government remains inactive.
According to SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, President Bola Tinubu approved the payment on July 18, 2024, during the National Minimum Wage meeting. Despite this, the payment remains pending.
The unions are demanding the payment of four months’ withheld salaries, better remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
In a joint statement, Ibrahim and Adeyemi expressed frustration with the government’s inaction, stating that the National Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU had decided to give the government a final three-week ultimatum, starting from September 17, 2024.
They warned that if the government fails to meet their demands, their members may be forced to embark on an indefinite strike action.
The potential strike could disrupt the academic calendar and impact university operations nationwide. University staff and students anxiously await the government’s response.
