Traders at the New Gbagi International Market in Ibadan, under the New Gbagi Petty Traders Association, have reported that two of their members have tragically died as a result of the ongoing demolition of their shops.

The traders also disclosed that 27 members have been hospitalized due to the stress and impact of the demolitions. This information was shared by the association’s chairman, Engineer Kolawole Oyewole, during an interview with journalists on Tuesday.

GWG.ng reports that the Oyo State government has been demolishing shops in the market, causing severe distress among the traders. Oyewole explained that the traders had previously organized a peaceful protest at the Olubadan’s palace, seeking intervention in the matter.

During his statement, Oyewole made an urgent plea to both the Olubadan and Governor Seyi Makinde to step in and halt the demolition. He expressed the devastating effects the demolition has had on their lives, saying, “Two of our members have lost their lives, and 27 are currently hospitalized since the demolition started on Sunday.”

He emphasized the need for a solution, urging authorities to stop further demolition, compensate for the damages caused, and engage in meaningful discussions. “Our people’s means of livelihood have been destroyed,” he added.

Oyewole also clarified that the Ibadan New Gbagi Market traders represent themselves and are not being represented by any outside parties. He strongly urged others not to misuse their name for personal agendas. “We will be very happy and grateful if our demands are considered,” he concluded, hoping for immediate action to address their concerns.
