Former Arsenal footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged with attempting to smuggle cannabis worth £600,000 ($800,000) through a British airport.

The 33-year-old, who currently plays for Scottish club Greenock Morton, was arrested early Wednesday at his home near Glasgow, according to the Press Association (PA).

Authorities detained Emmanuel-Thomas and took him to Carlisle in northern England for questioning, as confirmed by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

His football career began at Arsenal, where he made five appearances, including a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2010. He later played for clubs like Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, Aberdeen in Scotland, and PTT Rayong in Thailand.

The cannabis smuggling case came to light after customs officers found around 60 kilograms (130 pounds) of cannabis in two suitcases at Stansted Airport, arriving on a flight from Bangkok on September 2. Two women were also arrested in connection with the incident.

Emmanuel-Thomas is expected to appear in court in Carlisle on Thursday, facing charges of importing class B drugs. The NCA had earlier issued warnings to travelers from Thailand, Canada, and the United States, highlighting the severe penalties for attempting to bring cannabis into the UK, with drug couriers facing up to 14 years in prison if convicted.
