NAFDAC Issues Alert On Counterfeit Popular Nigerian Bathing Soap
Just few days after issued a warning on the popular bathing soap, Dove, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised another alarm over the circulation of a fake soap being sold under the label “Dettol Health Fresh Soap” in various Nigerian markets.
The NAFDAC alert follows a consumer complaint that has raised serious health concerns following use of the counterfeit Dettol soap.
In a public notice posted on Thursday, NAFDAC disclosed that the manufacturer of Dettol products, Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria Limited, confirmed that the soap in question is not an authentic part of their product line. “We do not have any product by the name ‘Dettol Health Fresh Soap,’” the company clarified, following a report from a consumer who experienced skin irritation after using the counterfeit soap.
Dettol is a popular antiseptic brand widely used across Nigeria for personal hygiene and household disinfection, known for preventing infections caused by bacteria and other germs. However, NAFDAC warned that counterfeit products like the fake Dettol soap pose serious health risks due to their lack of safety, quality, and efficacy standards.
In response to the growing concern, NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance efforts and remove the counterfeit product from circulation.
The agency has urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be extra vigilant in identifying fake goods. “It is crucial to source all medical and hygiene products from authorized suppliers to ensure their authenticity and safety,” NAFDAC stated, adding that the public should carefully verify the condition and packaging of such products before use.
NAFDAC is also calling on healthcare professionals and consumers to report any encounters with the counterfeit soap or any adverse health reactions it may cause. Reports can be filed via NAFDAC’s hotlines, website, or mobile app.
