Victor Osimhen’s Use Of Face Mask Under Probe After Collision

Reports from Turkish media suggest that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, who recently made his highly anticipated debut for Galatasaray, may face restrictions on wearing his protective face mask during matches in Turkey.

The concerns over the face mask follows concerns raised after a collision during Galatasaray’s 4-1 victory over Çaykur Rizespor, where Osimhen provided a crucial assist.

The incident involved a head-to-head clash between Osimhen and Çaykur Rizespor’s Khusniddin Alikulov, which left the latter with a concussion. Although initial fears of a facial fracture were ruled out, the injury has sparked debate about the safety of Osimhen’s mask, which features metal fasteners. Some argue that it could pose a potential risk to opponents.

Osimhen has worn the protective mask since November 2021, following a serious injury during his time with Napoli. In a match against Inter Milan, he suffered a devastating head injury after a clash with defender Milan Skriniar. The injury required extensive surgery, during which six plates and 18 screws were inserted into his face. This kept Osimhen sidelined for three months.

The mask, which has since become Osimhen’s trademark, was recommended by Napoli’s surgeon, Gianpaolo Tartaro, to protect the striker from further injury. In February 2022, Tartaro provided an update on the striker’s condition, advising the use of a smaller, more lightweight mask.

As the debate surrounding the safety of the mask intensifies, it remains to be seen whether Turkish football authorities will impose restrictions on its use, potentially affecting Osimhen’s ability to wear it during future matches.
