Edo People Not Dumb To Allow Wike Produce Their Governor – Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has downplayed concerns that his political rift with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, will affect the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming Edo State governorship election.

Wike, a key ally in Obaseki’s 2020 re-election bid, has openly declared that he will not support the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the Saturday election, following their fallout. Wike had been instrumental in rallying support for Obaseki against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, during the 2020 polls.

However, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Obaseki dismissed concerns about Wike’s influence, asserting that Edo people will make independent decisions at the polls.

“He (Wike) came to get Edo people to vote for me, right? Wow! Edo people are not that dumb; they know who to vote for,” Obaseki stated. “They don’t require the services of an outsider to make their decisions. Edo people will decide this time because they know what they want.”

Obaseki also addressed his political clashes with several key figures, including his former ally and predecessor Adams Oshiomhole and his deputy, Philip Shaibu. He acknowledged that some politicians were dissatisfied with his administration because he prioritized using government revenues to address the needs of the people rather than for political patronage.

Clarifying ‘Do or Die’ Remarks

The governor’s recent remarks that the upcoming election is a “do or die” affair sparked criticism from opposition parties. Obaseki later clarified his statement, emphasizing that the stakes are high for the people of Edo State, not for his political career.

“It’s a do or die affair because if they [APC] win, we die. The level of impunity and recklessness we see in the opposition party, if they take over Edo State, it’s finished – that’s the end,” Obaseki explained.

The governor stood by his statement, expressing concerns over what he described as the APC’s plans to manipulate the election. He warned that the people of Edo would resist any such efforts, reiterating his belief that a win for the APC would spell disaster for the state.

As the governorship election approaches, Obaseki remains confident that the PDP will emerge victorious, despite internal and external challenges, including the opposition from Wike.
