Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended several individuals suspected of engaging in vote-buying during the ongoing Edo Governorship election.

The arrests occurred in Egor Local Government Area around 10:00 a.m., as EFCC officials moved swiftly to curb election malpractices that may blight the process of producing the next governor of Edo State.

Among those detained were two men and a woman, who were taken away for questioning. However, the arrests sparked tension in the area, with some residents protesting the action and accusing the EFCC of unfairly targeting the suspects.

Despite the outcry, the EFCC has maintained its commitment to ensuring a free and fair election, vowing to crack down on illegal activities that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, in a statement, quoted Ola Olukoyede, the commission’s chairman as saying that the commission was committed to the attainment of the integrity of the election to produce a new governor of Edo State.

Olukoyede said that the anti-graft body would ensure voters insulation from every form of financial inducement while exercising their franchise.

“Our operatives have been deployed to monitor the conduct of the election.

”We are committed to the attainment of electoral integrity by ensuring that voters cast their votes democratically without any form of financial inducement.

“Vote buying is a financial crime and the EFCC won’t allow it anywhere,” he said of the agency’s operations during the Edo election.

According to him, the Commission has always been involved in monitoring every electoral process across the country in line with its mandate of tackling all forms of economic and financial crimes.
