Edo: INEC Uploads 74.68% Election Results On IReV Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded 74.68% of the results from Saturday’s Edo State governorship election to its INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

According to reports, 3,375 results out of the 4,519 polling units where voting took place in Edo State have been successfully uploaded.

Voting officially concluded after the last voter in each queue cast their ballot by 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024. However, in areas where the process started late, INEC extended the voting time, with individual polling units determining their closing time.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, praised the dedication of voters, who turned out in large numbers despite the heavy rainfall. After casting his vote at 11:57 a.m. at Oredo Ward 4, Unit 19, Emokpae Primary School, Obaseki commended the enthusiasm of the electorate.

“In spite of the weather, the turnout has been impressive,” Obaseki said. “The ballot box in my polling unit is full, showing how invested people are in this election. It’s a pivotal moment for Edo, and I’m particularly pleased with the strong presence of young voters fulfilling their civic duties.”

Besides the fact that 74% of the results of the Edo governorship election had been uploaded, Obaseki also highlighted the importance of the security agencies’ presence, specifically commending the military for maintaining order. He expressed satisfaction with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, for delivering on his promise to ensure a secure election environment.

“The military has done a commendable job,” Obaseki noted. “However, there are concerns about some individuals at Ogbe polling field claiming to be police officers and attempting to make arrests on Election Day. I’m not fully convinced about the role of the police at this moment.”

Despite these concerns, the governor maintained optimism, stating that the election process in his unit had been smooth. He hoped the collation and counting of results would proceed without disruption.

Obaseki’s comments come amid ongoing efforts to ensure that the election is free, fair, and peaceful, with reports of security forces on the ground and arrests being made to prevent disturbances.
