In a series of overnight raids aimed at curbing electoral violence ahead of the Edo State governorship election on Saturday, the Nigeria Police Force is reported to have arrested two political thugs and recovered firearms.

The arrests were confirmed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed that the suspects, Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, were apprehended following credible intelligence reports. Tajudeen, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo Quarters in Igara Akoko, and Obanor, a leader of an armed group, were said to be involved in plans to disrupt the election.

According to Adejobi, Obanor was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m., where police recovered three locally fabricated pistols from his possession. Tajudeen was apprehended in Igara Akoko with a locally made gun. Both men are currently in custody and will face prosecution.

The police spokesman emphasized that these arrests underscore the force’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election, warning that authorities will deal decisively with illegal arms bearers and those attempting to cause unrest.

The police have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via the designated helplines, as part of efforts to ensure a secure electoral process.
