Mikel Obi Praises Lookman For Choosing Nigeria Over England
By Benjamin Abioye
Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has praised Ademola Lookman for choosing to play for Nigeria instead of England while still in his prime.
Lookman, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth levels and was part of the team that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
In February 2022, FIFA approved Lookman’s request to change his international allegiance to Nigeria. Since then, the 26-year-old star from Atalanta has become an important player for the Super Eagles.
Speaking on BeIN Sports, Mikel Obi highlighted how crucial it is for players to make their international representation decisions early in their careers. He commended Lookman for making the switch without hesitation and praised his contributions to the Nigerian national team, saying Lookman has been a fantastic player.
Obi stated, “Players have to wait for a while before they decide they want to represent their African roots. I genuinely think it shouldn’t be that way. If you have decided where you want to play, you should stick with it. If you want to play for England, France, or Germany, you have to wait; if you don’t get called up, that’s your choice.”
He continued, “If you are 20 years old, make your decision; don’t wait until you are 26 or 28. Don’t wait until you are past your best and become a second option. I think Ademola Lookman made the right decision to switch quickly to represent Nigeria, and he’s done really well,” Mikel Obi said.
“He played well last season, and he’s such a fantastic player.”
