Edo: Obaseki Gives Directives In First Reaction To Election Result (Video)

Outgoing Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has called for calm across the state in his first reaction following the announcement of the Edo 2024 governorship election results.

In his first public reaction after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, as the winner of the Edo State governorship election, Obaseki urged residents to resist provocation and refrain from violence.

Obaseki, whose eight-year tenure is coming to an end, hinted at possible legal actions to challenge the results, signaling that the battle may not yet be over. “In the face of this outcome, I appeal to our people to remain peaceful and composed, even in the midst of provocation,” he said, suggesting that the PDP may contest the results in court.

GWG.ng reports that on Sunday, September 22, 2024, INEC announced that Okpebholo, had emerged victorious in the highly competitive race, securing 291,667 votes. He defeated his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes, while Labour Party’s (LP) Olumide Akpata finished a distant third with 22,763 votes.

The announcement was made by the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, at 9:27 pm at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital. “Having satisfied the requirements of the law, Okpebholo Monday of the APC is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Kuta declared, prompting loud cheers from APC supporters present at the venue.

Despite the victory celebrations from the APC camp, the tension remains palpable as the reaction of Obaseki suggests a looming legal showdown to the result of the Edo election. With the election over, all eyes are now on the next steps from the PDP and its legal team, as the state waits to see if this result will stand unchallenged or face a courtroom battle.

Fourteen other candidates participated in the election but failed to make significant headway, with the race dominated by the three major contenders from APC, PDP, and Labour Party.
