Edo: Police To Deter Dissent Through Show Of Force

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the activation of a post-election security strategy following the conclusion of the 2024 Edo State Governorship election.

In a press release issued late on Sunday, the Force emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and order as the collation of results neared completion.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the elections, DIG Frank Mba, disclosed that part of the strategy includes a Show of Force Exercise, which aims to boost public confidence and reassure Edo residents of the police’s preparedness to handle any security threats. The show of force is intended to demonstrate the police’s ability to respond swiftly to any disruptions, ensuring that public safety remains intact across the state.

As part of the post-election measures, the Force has increased security presence around INEC facilities, key election stakeholders, and critical infrastructure throughout Edo State. This heightened deployment is designed to protect these essential entities and prevent any attempt to disrupt the electoral process.

The statement, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, urged Edo citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding while continuing with their daily activities. It also warned against any behavior by individuals or groups that could disturb the peace.

“The Nigeria Police Force is more prepared than ever before to ensure continuous peace in the state,” the release added, highlighting that law enforcement agencies are fully equipped to handle any potential unrest.

The police encouraged the public to support the efforts of the security forces by staying calm and cooperating with authorities to ensure a smooth post-election transition.

With this security plan in place, the Nigeria Police aims to maintain the order that has characterized the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, assuring residents of the state’s safety as the election process comes to a close.
