Ossai Ovie Success, an aide to the Delta State Governor, recently stirred controversy online with a bold statement about women in cohabitation relationships with men without payment of the traditional bride price.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Ossai criticized women who live in cohabitation with their boyfriends without the traditional bride price being paid. He referred to them as “cheap commodities.”

He wrote, “Any woman who is staying in her man’s house without bride price payment is a cheap commodity.”

As expected, the statement set the social media abuzz, with some users agreeing with Ossai’s perspective, while others condemned his remarks. The debate over cohabitation and traditional values quickly became a trending topic.

In contrast, few months ago, popular Nigerian singer Simi offered a different take on the issue. She revealed that she and her husband, fellow singer Adekunle Gold, lived together before getting married, and that experience helped them better understand each other. Simi argued that cohabitation before marriage can be beneficial for couples, as it allows them to work through potential challenges before making a lifelong commitment.

Tackling Simi’s point of view, relationship coach Solomon Buchi shared his thoughts on the matter. According to Buchi, it is unrealistic to expect to fully know a partner before marriage, regardless of how long a couple lives or dates together. He emphasized that marriage often reveals new aspects of a relationship, and the reality of married life can surprise even couples who have been together for years.

Buchi advised couples not to delay marriage simply because they want to get to know each other better, as some things will only become clear after marriage.
