Government Adjusts Working Days for Civil Servants

In response to Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has approved new working days for civil servants and extended the payment of palliatives to public officials for the next two months to alleviate the rising cost of transportation and other living expenses.

A circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service outlined the new working days for public employees in Osun State. According to the directive, civil servants in Osun will now operate on a staggered work schedule depending on their grade level:

• Grade Level 01 to Grade Level 10: Three working days a week
• Grade Level 12 to Grade Level 17: Four working days a week

The circular also clarified that this new arrangement excludes employees performing essential duties, including healthcare workers, security personnel, political office holders, and accounting officers.

“It is important to note that each Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA) will arrange the specific workdays for affected staff in consultation with their Accounting Officers,” the circular added.

Furthermore, Governor Adeleke has extended the payment of previously agreed palliatives to state employees for the next two months, offering financial relief while the state transitions to a new minimum wage. All government ministries, departments, and agencies, including local governments, have been directed to implement these changes immediately.

Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke has hinted at a forthcoming exposé on alleged contract irregularities linked to officials from the previous administration under former Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

The White Paper Implementation Committee, chaired by Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, is expected to release its findings on the matter soon. In a radio interview, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, revealed that several former All Progressives Congress (APC) officials awarded contracts to companies where they held directorship positions while still in office.

Rasheed’s comments were a direct response to accusations from the APC that Governor Adeleke’s Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye, was involved in a contract awarded at Osun State University. Rasheed denied these claims, stating that Akinleye had resigned from the company in question before assuming his current role and had no involvement in the decision-making process related to the contract.
