Breaking: FG Increases Corps Members’ Allowance

In a significant boost to the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Federal Government has approved a new monthly allowance for corps members of ₦77,000.

This new allowance for the NYSC Corps members will take effect starting from July 2024, as part of the adjustments following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

The approval of the new NYSC Corps Members allowance was confirmed in an official letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. The long-awaited development is expected to provide substantial relief to corps members who have been advocating for a better financial package.

Before the increment, corps members received a monthly stipend of ₦33,000. The new ₦77,000 allowance represents a more than double increase, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring a more robust welfare scheme for young Nigerians serving their nation.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had earlier championed the cause for the allowance increase. During an advocacy visit to Mr. Nta, Ahmed highlighted the need for a more comprehensive welfare package for corps members, citing the high cost of living and the importance of motivating the youth in their national service duties. His efforts have now paid off with this timely adjustment.

Brigadier General Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the significant gesture, noting that it would not only provide much-needed financial relief but also serve to boost the morale of corps members across the country. He expressed optimism that the increment would inspire them to be even more dedicated in their various assignments and service to the nation.

“This is indeed a welcome development. The increment will not only bring succour to corps members but will also motivate them to serve the nation with renewed vigour and dedication,” said Ahmed.

Corps members, who previously struggled with the ₦33,000 stipend, have widely welcomed the news, taking to social media to express their appreciation. Many have acknowledged that the new allowance would go a long way in helping them meet their daily expenses and cope with the rising cost of living.

The NYSC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account confirmed the announcement, with the post generating excitement across the nation about the government’s new commitment to supporting the youth.

As this new allowance structure takes effect, the increase is seen as not only a step toward improving the lives of corps members but also as a statement by the government on the importance of youth empowerment and national service.
