Raphael Varane, the renowned French defender, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.

The news came as a shock to fans and players alike, as Varane has had a stellar career with clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Varane has struggled with injuries in recent years. He suffered a serious knee injury just 20 minutes into his debut for Italian club, Como last month. This injury left him unable to join Como’s squad for Serie A matches. Reports suggested that he was considering retirement, and on Wednesday morning, Varane confirmed the news through a heartfelt post on his Instagram account.

Many of Varane’s former teammates and clubs quickly shared their tributes. Manchester United praised him, saying, “You represented our colors with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford. We thank you for your humility, leadership, and commitment.” They added, “Once a Red, always a Red.”

Varane’s former teammates at United also expressed their well-wishes. Nemanja Matic wrote, “Happy retirement, my friend. It was a pleasure to play with you.” Diogo Dalot added, “Football will miss you.”

In addition to Manchester United, former colleagues from Real Madrid sent their messages of support. Lucas Vazquez simply said, “Thank you, Rapha! Legend.” Louis Saha, another United and France star, praised Varane’s exceptional career.

Varane’s announcement came after an impressive football journey that began at Lens, followed by a decade at Real Madrid. He won numerous trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga titles. He joined Manchester United in 2021 and won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his three years with the club.

Reflecting on his career, Varane wrote, “I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates, and the supporters of every team I have played for. I hold myself to the highest standard. I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game.”

Despite stepping away from playing, Varane plans to remain with Como in a new role that is yet to be announced. As he looks ahead to this new chapter, the football community continues to honor his remarkable contributions to the game.
