Bobrisky: Reps To Investigate EFCC Over ₦15 Million Allegation
By Benjamin Abioye
The House of Representatives took action on Thursday by agreeing to investigate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over claims that its operatives collected N15m from controversial crossdresser, Bobrisky to drop the money laundry charges raised against him or her.
Recall that social media influencer named Martins Otse, who goes by the name VeryDarkMan, claimed that Bobrisky, after being convicted for abusing the naira, did not serve his or her time in a correctional facility but instead spent it in a private residence.
The investigation was prompted by a motion titled “Urgent Need to Investigate the Disturbing Allegation of Corruption Against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service.” This motion was introduced by Hon. Patrick Umoh.
Following this motion, the House decided to form a committee to look into the allegations against the EFCC.
Hon. Umoh’s motion included statements noting, “The House notes the disturbing and widely circulated publication emanating from Martins Vincent Otse (also known as VeryDarkMan) against critical Nigerian law enforcement institutions; the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service.”
He added, “Also notes the publication alleges that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dropped money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye (also known as Bobrisky) upon collection of the sum of Fifteen Million Naira (₦15,000,000).”
Furthermore, the motion pointed out that “Idris Okuneye, upon conviction for abuse and defacing of the Naira, by the court did not serve his time at the Nigerian Correctional Service but was lodged outside the confines of the Service.”
The motion concluded by urging the House to set up an ad-hoc committee of individuals with strong integrity to investigate these allegations and report back to the House within three legislative weeks.
