A photo of the reinstated Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has caused controversy after he was shown walking on a customized rug with his adopted name, ‘Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II,’ engraved on it.

Some Islamic clerics have criticized the emir, saying he disrespected religious traditions.

In response to the controversy, Emir Sanusi defended himself by emphasizing that his intentions are what truly matter. He cited religious teachings to explain that he had no intention of disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad.

The controversy escalated after a video surfaced of Muhammad Sharif, an Islamic cleric from Zaria, criticizing Emir Sanusi. Sharif accused Sanusi of not following the protocols set by the founders of the Tijjaniyya order, Ahmadu Tijjani and Ibrahim Niasse. He then pointed to Muhammad Ali, the late American boxer, as an example of respect.

Sharif recalled how Ali refused to have his name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame out of reverence for the Prophet Muhammad. Ali, sharing his name with the Prophet, did not want it placed on the ground where it could be stepped on. Instead, he asked that his star be mounted on a wall. In 2002, the Hollywood Walk of Fame honored Ali’s request by placing his star on the wall of the Kodak Theater, breaking from the tradition of sidewalk placements.

Sharif said, “I saw how Muhammad Sanusi, claiming to be the Khalifa of Tijjaniyya, is walking on a carpet inscribed with Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi. The name Muhammad is above someone to walk on if you truly respect the name; not even the Khalifa of Tijjaniyya or any other Muslim, even non-Muslims who know the right thing, can walk on Muhammad’s name.”

He further questioned the emir’s adherence to the teachings of Ahmadu Tijjani. He expressed doubts about whether Sanusi is a true follower of the Tijjaniyya founder.

Another cleric from the Tijjaniyya sect, Ali Abdulrahman, also voiced his disapproval of Emir Sanusi over the controversy. He stated that if the emir had walked on the name Muhammad during the time of Imam Malik, he would have been punished for disrespecting a religious creed.
