Omumu Community Celebrates New Yam Festival

There was an excited effusion of tradition and culture as Omumu Community in Agbor, Ika South Local Government recently marked the New Yam Festival amid glitz and glamour

Omumu Community, Agbor, Delta State has celebrated its 2024 Uturu (New Yam Festival). The event which was celebrated, Sunday, September 15 was witnessed by Omumu indigenes and guests from different parts of the state.

The leader of the Community and Elema of Omumu, Chief Ndidi Ibegbulem, in his speech stated that “Uturu” is an aged long traditional festival of Omumu people that marks the beginning of the eating of new yam and also, serves as a medium to appreciate the gods of the land for a bumper yam harvest.

The Elema disclosed that Uturu festival is a unique cultural heritage which the Omumu people will continue to cherish, promote and sustain.

He described this year’s Uturu as a huge success. He expressed appreciation to Omumu sons and daughters who contributed in various ways towards the success of the festival.

The community leader declared that he is happy and proud of the cultural heritage of his people and assured that they will continue to uphold it 

He noted that culture is very significant in the existence of any given community, therefore, everyone should endeavours to promote their own.

While thanking guests at the event , the Omumu Community leader expressed gratitude to His Royal Majesty, Dr Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekwuzi 1, CON, Dein of Agbor, for creating the enabling environment for him(Elema) to lead.He declared that he will not relent in joining efforts with other Agbor community leaders to promote the rich cultural heritage of Agbor Kingdom.

An illustrious son of the community, Sir Timothy Okwuazunwuegeun, in an interview with journalists during the event said that he was overwhelmed with joy that the Omumu Uturu Festival has come to stay. He stated that he was proud to identify with his people of Omumu Community, particularly in the area of preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. He commended all persons who are part of the efforts to promote Omumu cultural heritage. He used the medium to call on Nigerians to embrace moves for the preservation of Nigeria s rich culture and traditions.

Another illustrious son of Omumu Community, Mr Echi Obue, JP, in an interview hailed the success of the  2024 Uturu Festival, noting Omumu Community has done great by preserving its cultural heritage. He advised that every well meaning Nigerian should help advance the country ‘s rich culture and traditions. He called on his people to keep supporting efforts aimed at moving Omumu Community forward.

The event featured wrestling competition, exhibition of new yam tubers and giving of free cutlasses to best farmers. Cash prizes were given to winners of the various listed categories. Among dignitaries who witnessed the annual festival were Agbor Community leaders(Ndi Ichen Agbor), Palace Chiefs, businessmen and public office holders. The guest artiste of the day, was Omumu born highlife music star, Aghaolor Solomon Onyekachukwu, popularly known as, ASO.
