Chief Executive Officer of First Bank, Olusegun Alebiosu, has called on world leaders to prioritize poverty eradication, describing it as a critical issue that should keep global leaders awake at night.

Alebiosu made the charge on prioritizing poverty eradicaiton in an interview with Arise TV at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he also emphasized the importance of tackling climate change and gender inequality.

Alebiosu highlighted that poverty, in its various forms, is rooted in a lack of access to resources and opportunities, with finance being the most crucial factor in combating poverty in the 21st century. “The easiest way to get out of poverty is access to finance,” he stated, stressing the transformative role of financial inclusion in empowering individuals and communities.

During the UN Global Compact Leaders’ Summit, an event held alongside the General Assembly, Alebiosu discussed key themes including innovative financing, sustainable development, and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on society. He emphasized the necessity of human resource development to address the growing economic disparity between developed and developing nations.

“This focus on human capital development mirrors the United Nations’ dedication to sustainable development and equality, particularly in areas like gender equality, climate action, and ensuring fair wages,” Alebiosu noted, underscoring the need for a global commitment to bridging the economic gap.

Alebiosu also shared his vision for First Bank’s future, highlighting its role in driving economic development across Nigeria and Africa. “First Bank will continue to be deeply embedded in the fabric of society, earning its place as a leading advocate for economic progress in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.”

The UN Global Compact Leaders’ Summit is an annual gathering that brings together private sector leaders, government officials, UN representatives, and civil society members to discuss sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda. The event provides a platform for exploring innovative solutions to global challenges and delivering actionable insights for a more equitable and sustainable future.
