“He Is Politically Dead,” Oshiomhole Explains How Obaseki Lost Out

Former Edo State governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has criticized the performance of the current governor, Godwin Obaseki. He labeled Obaseki’s eight years in office as a complete failure and argued that the governor’s record does not justify support for any candidate he endorsed in the recent gubernatorial election.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Oshiomhole expressed doubt about Obaseki’s ability to influence voters, stating that the governor had severed ties with many of his former supporters. This fallout, according to Oshiomhole, has left Obaseki isolated and struggling to garner political support.

“Obaseki misgoverned the state, defrauded the people, and jailed innocent women. He did many terrible things that no one with the fear of God would do to his own people,” Oshiomhole said. “He used his power to threaten people and made promises he never kept. He even fought against the royal father. He crushed people to maintain control. But now, we have consigned him to the dustbin of political history.”

Oshiomhole noted that, despite their personal friendship, Obaseki’s performance as governor was deeply disappointing. “As a person, he is my friend, but as governor, he was a failure,” he stated.

Reflecting on the election outcome, Oshiomhole said it was predictable that Obaseki and his preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo, would lose. “There was nothing in Obaseki’s performance or Asue’s credentials that could have made them win. Obaseki is like a blind man who, in 2016, rode on my back as an outgoing governor to cross the river. He didn’t understand what it took to become a governor,” Oshiomhole remarked.

He added that Obaseki’s 2020 re-election was also due to support from external forces. “Obaseki had backing from elements within the APC and Governor Nyesom Wike, who left Port-Harcourt to campaign for him in Benin. Obaseki crossed the river for the second time without facing the challenges himself. He was described as an ‘iron man,’ but now he’s a lonely man,” Oshiomhole continued.

According to Oshiomhole, Obaseki’s political troubles were self-inflicted, as he burned bridges with key allies within both the APC and PDP. “He has divided the PDP into two, lost support from Wike, and even his deputy. This time, he had to cross the river on his own, but he got stuck,” Oshiomhole concluded. “Edo people have spoken, and now Obaseki is politically dead.”
