Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. He arrived in Abuja on Sunday.

At the UNGA, Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu and presented Nigeria’s National Statement during the General Debate. He also participated in various bilateral meetings and attended several side events.

According to his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will soon join President Tinubu to participate in events organized to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.

At the UNGA, Nigeria secured significant funding commitments, including $600,000 for flood relief and $5 million for agricultural reforms from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation pledged $600,000 specifically for flood relief efforts in Borno State and other health initiatives. Additionally, a $5 million grant was approved for the Lagos Business School and its partners to enhance the agricultural economics of industrial cassava.

While meeting with Dr. Christopher Elias, the Global Development Programme Director of the Gates Foundation, Shettima on the sidelines of the UNGA emphasized Nigeria’s recognition of the importance of food security and industrial agricultural development. He stated, “The Cassava Accelerator programme, in particular, holds immense potential for our economy. We are pursuing a whole-of-government approach to digitisation and data exchange systems, which we believe will revolutionize our public services.”
