The Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State, Michael Benson, has denied being officially suspended over bribery allegations involving popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky.

Benson, who was reportedly suspended last week along with other senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, dismissed the suspension as mere “social media suspension.” He made this claim during his appearance at the House of Representatives’ investigative hearing on the matter.

“I have not received any letter of suspension. It is social media suspension,” Benson told the committee members during questioning.

The suspension, ordered by the Federal Government, was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Ja’afaru Ahmed. The statement referred to a viral video that brought to light alleged infractions by the correctional officers related to Bobrisky.

“Following the viral video trending on social media regarding alleged infractions by officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service related to Mr. Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended forthwith the following Senior Officers of the Service,” Ahmed stated.

The statement listed Michael Anugwa, the Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, as the affected officials.

Despite the public announcement, Benson insisted he has not been formally informed and maintained that he is still in his role, questioning the validity of the suspension.

The House of Representatives is continuing its investigation into the bribery allegations surrounding Bobrisky and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
