Weekend Highlights: Top Nigerian Players Impact Clubs Abroad
By Benjamin Abioye
Last weekend, many Nigerian footballers playing abroad made significant impacts on their teams. During the matches on September 28 and 29, several players delivered impressive performances, while others faced challenges.
One standout was Victor Osimhen, who played for Galatasaray in Turkey. He scored two goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kasımpaşa. Unfortunately, his game ended prematurely due to an injury at the beginning of the second half.
Despite their strong performances this season, some notable Nigerian footballers struggled. Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon did not manage to score or assist their teams last weekend.
Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons goalkeeper for Paris FC, was in great form, making eight saves in a remarkable 8-0 victory over Le Havre. In Spain, Chidera Ejuke and Kelechi Iheanacho started for Sevilla, contributing to a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao, with Ejuke assisting the late equalizer.
In South Africa, Stanley Nwabali made three crucial saves for Chippa United in their 2-1 win over TS Galaxy. In Saudi Arabia, William Troost-Ekong netted a goal for Al Kholood, but his team lost 4-2 to Al Hilal.
In England, Josh Maja scored for West Brom in a tough 3-2 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tom Dele-Bashiru secured a late penalty to help Watford win 2-1 over Sunderland. Akor Adams provided an assist for Montpellier in their 2-1 loss to AS Monaco.
In Italy, Maduka Okoye made four saves in Udinese’s 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan. Ibrahim Yusuf scored twice for West Armenia in their 2-0 victory against Alashkert. Abdulrahman Taiwo also had a great game, scoring twice for FK Auda in a 3-2 win over Valmiera.
Overall, the weekend showcased the talent of Nigerian footballers abroad, with some shining brightly while others will look to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
