Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling him “confused” over his handling of the country’s economic challenges.

Sowunmi made these remarks during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he discussed the government’s recent tough economic decisions.

Sowunmi expressed concern over the current state of Nigeria’s economy, particularly the handling of the currency’s value and fuel pricing. He questioned the approach of both the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), suggesting that Tinubu’s administration lacks direction.

“I am so optimistic, but I tell people, if Tinubu can’t figure out these things, I wonder who can,” Sowunmi said. “One, he is confused. Two, smiling at Mele Kyari without explanation doesn’t make sense. What are the CBN people doing about the value of the naira? Are they trying to turn our currency into toilet paper by floating it? And what exactly is the science behind petrol pricing when you are refining locally?”

Sowunmi added that he has been conducting research on alternative approaches to fuel pricing and promised to present his findings soon.

In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) quickly defended President Tinubu, with the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissing Sowunmi’s claims. Morka emphasized that Tinubu is fully committed to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and improving the country’s fortunes in the long term.

“This president will not only fix the challenges but will demonstrate he means business by showing massive improvements in a sustainable manner,” Morka said. He also blamed the PDP for the country’s current problems, stating that former President Muhammadu Buhari spent eight years cleaning up the mess caused by the PDP’s 16-year rule.
