Former Spain international and FC Barcelona star Andrés Iniesta has officially retired from professional football at the age of 40.

Known as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Iniesta recently played for Emirates Club in the UAE. Prior to that, he spent five years with Vissel Kobe in Japan after leaving FC Barcelona, where he left a lasting legacy when he departed in 2018.

Iniesta came up through Barcelona’s La Masia academy alongside famous players like Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets. He made 674 appearances for Barcelona and was instrumental in helping the team win nine La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.

During his international career with Spain, Iniesta earned 131 caps and played a key role in winning two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. He scored a memorable extra-time goal in the final against the Netherlands, which secured Spain’s first World Cup title.

According to Relevo, Iniesta will make his retirement announcement on October 8, a date that is significant to him as it relates to his favorite shirt number. Although there were rumors of a possible move to MLS with Inter Miami, Iniesta is now focusing on starting a coaching career.

He has also expressed his wish to return to Barcelona at some point, saying, “Obviously, I would like to return to Barca at some point in my life because that’s how I feel, but I don’t know when or how to say now, nor does anyone else. We’ll see how things go during this time and then we’ll see where we are.”
