All Progressives Congress, APC chiefs Senator Ali Ndume and Bashir Ahmad who served as a social media aide in the Muhammadu Buhari presidency have disagreed over the roles played by Buhari and his predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan in the defeat of Boko Haram.

Bashir Ahmad, has averred that Boko Haram was largely and “technically defeated” by the time Buhari left office.

Ahmad made the remarks in response to comments by Senator Ali Ndume, who credited former President Goodluck Jonathan for significant progress in combating the extremist group.

According to Ahmad, when Buhari took over in 2015, Boko Haram had complete control over 17 local government areas in Borno State. He noted that this demonstrated the seriousness of the insurgency back then. He added that many parts of Borno, as well as some areas in Adamawa and Yobe States, were off-limits due to terrorism.

“It is hilarious when I read a report in the ‘Daily Trust’ where Sen. Ali Ndume from Borno attempted to credit former President Jonathan for defeating Boko Haram,” Ahmad remarked. “While history is often one of the easiest things to be rewritten in Nigeria, this particular one will be very difficult to change.”

He further explained that critical infrastructure, such as airports, schools, and hospitals, were shut down during that period. He concluded by saying that by the time Buhari left office in 2023, Boko Haram had largely been defeated and had “technically become a thing of the past.”
