EFCC Faces Backlash Over Dropped Charges Against Bobrisky as Netizens Express Distrust

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is facing a backlash from the public following its explanation for the decision to drop the money laundering charges against popular internet personality, Bobrisky.

The backlash against the EFCC came after the commission denied claims of financial inducement in the decision to drop the money laundry charges as first preferred against Bobrisky.

The Commission explained that the charges against Bobrisky were amended due to his “confessional statement” regarding naira abuse in court, not because of any bribes.

The EFCC also said that the money laundering charges were dropped because they could not be sustained in court.

Bilikisu Buhari, representing the EFCC at the hearing, stated, “There was no form of financial inducement to any member of the commission. All we did was in line with the core values of the commission.”

Despite these reassurances, Nigerians online were not convinced as they turned in backlash against the EFCC over its dealing with Bobrisky.

The Commission’s social media pages have since been flooded with comments from netizens accusing the EFCC of lacking transparency and credibility. Many believe that the dropping of charges is suspicious and question the Commission’s integrity in handling such high-profile cases.

One angry commenter wrote, “EFCC is no longer trustworthy. We know how the system works. How can a confessional statement make such charges disappear?” Another user remarked, “They think Nigerians are foolish. Confession or no confession, something smells off about this case.”

Many commenters also took issue with the timing of the dropped charges, with some suggesting that powerful individuals may have influenced the decision.

During the House hearing, activist Verydarkman, whose allegations sparked the investigation, presented audio recordings he claimed were evidence of wrongdoing. He told the Committee that he obtained the recording from someone who had lent Bobrisky four million naira. “Bobrisky claimed he had a Godfather. I don’t know if that Godfather is here, but I will present more evidence as I have additional audio recordings,” he said.

Despite this, Bobrisky’s legal counsel, Avwerosuoghene Omuvwie, told the Committee that his client could not attend the hearing due to illness. The Deputy Controller of Maximum Correctional Center Kirikiri, Micheal Beson Anukwa, also testified, insisting that Bobrisky was held in a legitimate correctional facility following his conviction.

However, none of these details seemed to ease the outrage from Nigerians, who continue to question the EFCC’s role in the case. The Commission’s credibility is now under intense public scrutiny, with netizens demanding more accountability and transparency in future investigations.

Read some netizens’ reactions to the EFCC claims below;

@ishow_leck: To start with, is it that you people didn’t do your investigation right before you changed him for money laundering? Secondly, when he was charged, the whole public knew about it. Why was there no publication to announce the drop of the money laundering case when there were changes in his charge?Lastly, a few days ago, you people posted 3 officers suspended regarding this issue of bribery allegations from boborisky, but your update is now different from the previous. What’s going on with your system?

@thennekah: I’m not about to read this long useless story because I am very sure it’s meaningless and full of lies, godfatherism and coverups but all we know is “everyday for the thief, one day for the owner”. Nothing is hidden in the dark forever

@mautin: At this point, it looks like you people are even worst than the Yahoo Bois you go about kicking doors on at every hotel and parading them like harmful terror!st… una no dey try

@ifesim1: This commission is useless with all due respect

@light: It’s really sad to see that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria, which was set up to fight corruption, has actually become a part of the problem it’s supposed to solve. The corruption is so deep-rooted that truth and integrity are often sacrificed for personal gain and influence

@princeofigala: You people did not do your investigation before the 6 count charge? When you dropped some charges from 6 to 4, how come you didn’t make it public like this until exposed? This is a shame, and it means 15m was truly paid

As the controversy grows, the Chairman of the House Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, announced that at the next hearing, the individual who made the controversial audio recording will be required to testify. This upcoming session may shed more light on the case, but for now, the EFCC remains in the crosshairs of public opinion.
