Present generation in wonder how their parents gulped everything!

There was a time when the Nigerian economy was good and with it came some benefits that the older generation of Nigerians enjoyed which are today not within the reach of average Nigerians.

Things started going downhill in Nigeria in the mid and late 80s and it is a fact that today’s grandparents and great-grandparents besides the modernisation and technological innovations enjoyed a better life than the present generation.

Here are some of the things that the older generation enjoyed in Nigeria which the younger ones are lacking:

Affordable housing

Many people with government jobs were provided with houses at little to no rent. Land was also much more affordable, and building materials like cement and blocks were cheap, making it easier to build homes.

Today, owning a house has becomes a difficult with the privilege few that can afford the cost.

Easier access to cars

At that time, once you had a stable job or a successful business, it was easy to afford a decent car.

Better university education

University attendance was rare, and competition for spots was high, but those who attended enjoyed a lot of benefits. The hostels were clean and well-maintained and many of them were fed with quarter chicken parts at prices of between 25k to 50k

Low unemployment rate

Back then, a secondary school leaving certificate was often enough to secure a job as a civil servant, filling vacancies left by colonialists. Having a trade or craft meant you could live a comfortable life.

Free education

At that time, , primary and secondary education were completely free.

While universal basic education still exists today, the quality of education, and even the learning environment, has drastically declined.

Security

Security was something the older generation of Nigerians took for granted and easily travelled from one section of the country to the other even using night buses. However, night travel has now become a great risk for many Nigerians with bandits on the prowl.
