Amaechi Leading Our Battle Against Wike’s Men For Rivers LGs – APC
The battle for the control of the local government structure is in full gear in Rivers State with the penultimate governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi being formally mentioned as leading the fight against his political traducer, Nyesom Wike
Rotimi Amaechi is fully backing the decision of the court-ordained leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State to field candidates for the forthcoming local government election in the state, the chairman of the party, Emeka Beke said on Wednesday.
Speaking when he handed over the party’s flags to the candidates for the local government election, Beke rebuffed insinuations that Amaechi had removed himself from partisan politics saying that the state leadership was inspired in its moves by the leadership of Amaechi.
GWG.ng reports that the reference to Amaechi is against the background of the opposition to the local government election by his successor as governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.
Wike is in control of the state leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which is opposed to the local government election as initiated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a former protegee of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Wike’s faction of the APC led by Tony Okocha is also opposed to the conduct of the local government election.
Speaking on Wednesday as he handed over the party’s flags to APC candidates, Beke said:
“Amaechi remains the leader of APC in Rivers State. There is no way you will write the history of politics in the state, especially APC, that you will not write one full book on Amaechi.
“Amaechi is still strong in politics and remains a member of the APC. He is in support of APC fielding candidates for the election,” Beke said in affirming the Amaechi factor in the fight between Wike and Fubara over the local government election in Rivers State.
Affirming that the election will go ahead as planned, Beke said that there was already a court judgement in Port Harcourt by Justice I. Igwe, which paved the way for the election before that of Justice Peter Lifu of Federal High Court, Abuja.
“There is a judgement of court before that their Abuja judgement. I don’t know the reason they want to drag the state in the mud. They should stop deceiving their supporters. Election is going to take place on Saturday and anyone who creates problem will carry it on his head.
“There is no tension in the state. Who will create the tension? Rivers people are stronger than those characters.”
“APC is a party well established in Rivers State. We had started consultation at the unit, wards and LGA levels. What we are doing today is just formality. You can see that only APC and one other party have flagged off their campaign in the state. APC is stronger in Rivers State.”
