Protest Against Rivers Local Government Election Breaks Out
Protest against the Saturday local government election in Rivers State overflowed to the streets of the state capital, Port Harcourt on Thursday morning.
GWG.ng reports that hundreds of protesters comprising members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) stormed the streets to protest against the plan to conduct the election citing the judicial pronouncement of a Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, a State High Court in Port-Harcourt had earlier given the authorities in the state to forge ahead with the poll.
The protesters who displayed various placards, converged mobilised from the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt and marched along the Azikiwe Road towards the Government House.
Heavy security was observed trailing the portesters.
GWG.ng reports that Governor SIminalyi Fubara who has ordered a two day holiday to enable the local government election to hold has yet to meet the protesters and it is not known if he would send emissaries to address them.
Before the protest, Fubara had declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays ahead of the local government council election.
Fubara who announced this during a broadcast on Wednesday, said that the holidays would enable residents of the state to prepare for the election.
The governor also placed ban on vehicular movement between 12.00am on Friday and 5.00p.m on Saturday.
He said that the council poll was in compliance with Supreme Court’s judgment which ordered elections to be conducted in local government councils across the country.
“It was on the strength of this judgement that I directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission to take steps towards conducting council elections,” he said.
